Campers were taught and performed the hulas and chants at field trips that were significant to what was being learned during the week-long program. Campers learned about ocean animals and sea birds, to plant and maintain a garden, navigation and voyaging. Field trips included visits to the mauI fishpond, huI o wa'a kaulua to visit canoes mo'okiha o pi'ilanI and mo'olele, kI puka olowalu cultural reserve. Campers also were able to complete a voyage by paddling from north kiheI to makena, camping overnight, and paddling back to north kiheI the next day. Over 50 students have benefited from the ho'oulu ka 'ike program. Protocol and hula program: during weekly classes led by kumu kapono kamaunu, hocvs seeks to educate and perpetuate hawaiian cultural practices by teaching relevant canoe chants and hulas to attendees of the program. These chants and hulas are performed during voyages and other cultural programs that hocvs participates in each year.
