Ústav je veřejně prospěšnou právnickou osobou, jejímž posláním je přispívat vlastní činností k dosahování obecného blaha. Účelem ústavu je zejména dokumentace vzpomínek pamětníků historických fenoménů a rozšiřování povědomí veřejnosti o těchto příbězích, svědectvích a hodnotách předešlých generací.
