Museums, orchestras, and opera houses carry costs a community choir or local theater never has to budget for: buildings, collections, and venues that show up in the same filing as ticket and membership revenue. That is largely what separates the top of this arts and culture ranking from the groups doing the most hands-on programming. This list only includes organizations that publish annual figures, so smaller cultural groups, and those where arts nonprofits face lighter disclosure requirements, are missing from the count rather than judged and placed lower. Position here says nothing about the quality of the work on stage.
