One large land acquisition can double a conservation group's reported revenue for a single filing year, which is why land trusts and easement-holding federations tend to sit near the top of this environmental ranking rather than the groups doing the most fieldwork. A local watershed cleanup crew works at a completely different financial scale and always will. This list is built only from organizations that publish annual figures, so smaller land stewards, and conservation groups where filing requirements are lighter, are missing from the count rather than ranked low. Revenue size says nothing about how much habitat is actually protected.
