Zweck des BKD ist die Förderung der Kleingärtnerei. Dies wir u.a. angestrebt durch die Fortentwicklung der rechtlichen Grundlagen, insbesondere zum Schutz der Kleingärten in der Dauernutzung und der Errichtung neuer Dauerkleingartenanlagen zur Förderung der allgemeinen Lebensqualität. Dabei legt der BKD besonderen Wer auf die Förderung des Umwelt-, Natur- und Landschaftsschutzes.
