The purpose of the Institute is to care for the preservation, promotion, public disclosure and development of the legacy of filmmaker Karel Zeman, including presentation of his personality and work, monitoring the development of film trick and animated production in the Czech Republic in the context of European and world cinema. The Institute achieves its purpose in performing following activities (services) a) exhibition and collection activities that document the development of film tricks and animated works by Karel Zeman, his predecessors and followers in Bohemia and abroad, (b) the digitization and restoration of the works of Karel Zeman and their mediation to the public; c) mapping, theoretical reflection and promotion of Czech film trick and animated work, especially in the context of the work by Karel Zeman through documentary and theoretical works (documentary film and publication activities), (d) organising conferences, seminars, lectures, workshops, commented tours, interactive programmes and other educational activities in the field of film production and its history, (e) organising film screenings and other cultural programmes and events for the general public and professional public related to the fulfilment of the Institute's purpose; (f) research activities in the field of filmmaking and film history, particularly in relation to the work of Karel Zeman; (g) carry out other activities arising from the purpose of the Institute, in particular: it allows for payment to be paid for visits to exhibitions, exhibitions and other cultural events, provides for payment of additional services arising from the subject of the activity, sells both own and purchased souvenirs and other goods promoting the subject of the activity, copies, replicas and other copies of the collections, audio carriers and video recordings; (h) provide information services related to the subject matter of the activity.

Účelem ústavu je péče o uchování, propagace, zpřístupňování veřejnosti a rozvoj odkazu filmového tvůrce Karla Zemana včetně prezentace jeho osobnosti a díla, sledování vývoje filmového triku a animované tvorby v Čechách v kontextu evropské a světové kinematografie. Ústav dosahuje svého účelu výkonem následujících činností (služeb) a) výstavní a sbírkové činnosti, které dokumentují vývoj filmového triku a animované tvorby Karla Zemana, jeho předchůdců i následovníků v Čechách i zahraničí, b) digitalizace a restaurování děl Karla Zemana a jejich zprostředkování veřejnosti, c) mapování, teoretická reflexe a propagace českého filmového triku a animované tvorby, zejména v kontextu díla Karla Zemana prostřednictvím dokumentárních a teoretických děl (dokumentární filmová a publikační činnost), d) pořádání konferencí, seminářů, přednášek, dílen, komentovaných prohlídek, interaktivních programů a další vzdělávací činnost v oblasti filmové tvorby a její historie, e) pořádání filmových projekcí a dalších kulturních programů a akcí pro širokou i odbornou veřejnost souvisejících s naplňováním účelu ústavu, f) badatelská činnost v oblasti filmové tvorby a filmové historie, zejména v souvislosti s dílem Karla Zemana, g) vykonává další činnosti vyplývající z účelu ústavu, zejména: umožňuje za úplatu návštěvu expozic, výstav a dalších kulturních akcí, poskytuje za úplatu další služby vyplývající z předmětu činnosti, prodává vlastní i nakoupené upomínkové předměty a další zboží propagující předmět činnosti, kopie, repliky a další rozmnoženiny sbírkových předmětů, nosiče audio a video nahrávek, h) poskytuje informační služby související s předmětem činnosti.
