openPetition gGmbH is a gemeinnützige GmbH (gGmbH) - a nonprofit limited liability company. The gGmbH combines the commercial structure of a GmbH with a nonprofit mandate: profits must be reinvested in the charitable purpose and cannot be distributed to shareholders. The gGmbH is increasingly popular for social enterprises and charitable subsidiaries. It is governed by the GmbH-Gesetz with additional requirements from the Abgabenordnung for the 'gemeinnuetzig' designation. It is registered in the Zuwendungsempfaengerregister (ZER) maintained by the Bundeszentralamt fuer Steuern (BZSt).

Second, you can look up the association in the Vereinsregister (association register) at the local Amtsgericht (district court) via https://www.handelsregister.de/ - this confirms the legal form, registered address, and board members. Third, check whether the organisation holds the Freistellungsbescheid (tax-exemption notice) from its local Finanzamt - the notice is re-issued every three years and confirms the 'gemeinnuetzig' status under the Abgabenordnung. Legitimate charities publish this on their website or provide it on request.
You can donate to openPetition gGmbH directly through its donation page (https://www.openpetition.de/spenden?op_source=header). Many German charities use platforms like betterplace.org, GoFundMe, or their own Spendenseite (donation page). International donors can give via SEPA transfer (Germany is in the eurozone) or PayPal. For your donation to be tax-deductible, you need a Zuwendungsbestaetigung (donation receipt) from the organisation - for amounts up to 300 euros, a bank statement showing the transfer is sufficient.

Trustpilot
In former time they had quite good ideas. The new business model seems to involve to force users to pay for taking part in any petition. I found no posibility to contribute without paying. So in the end they only aggregate user-payed data and send the result to authorities as "petition".
