About this cause

What is an education charity?

Education as a cause gathers the organizations working to get people into learning and keep them there: school builders and operators, tutoring and after-school programs, teacher training groups, and funds that cover classrooms, materials, and fees. Use the filters above to narrow the directory by country and by organization size. The Education tag on each profile is GiveRadar's own assignment, made from the charity's name, stated mission, and registry classification: no organization can choose it or pay for it.

An education charity is a nonprofit organization whose work centers on learning: building or running schools, supporting students and teachers, or removing the barriers of cost, distance, and exclusion that keep people out of the classroom. The label covers very different models, from a fund that pays school fees to an operator with its own classrooms and payroll, and this page lists all of them side by side. Many of the organizations here also appear on our SDG 4 page, the UN goal that frames education globally; this cause page is the wider view, driven by what each charity's registry record and stated mission say it does.

What they do

How do education charities improve access to learning?

Education charities work on both sides of the school gate: building the supply of good schooling and removing whatever keeps a learner from using it. Typical work includes:

  • Building and equipping classrooms, libraries, and labs where school places are scarce
  • Covering the recurring costs schools struggle with: teacher pay, meals, transport, maintenance
  • Training and mentoring teachers so quality keeps pace with enrollment
  • Tutoring and after-school support for students at risk of falling behind or dropping out
  • Reaching learners mainstream systems miss: girls kept out of school, children with disabilities, refugees, working adults
  • Supplying learning materials, from textbooks to devices and connectivity
  • Pressing local and national governments to fund and improve public education

Related causes have their own pages: Scholarships covers the funds that pay for individual students' education.

Before you give

Giving to education: funder or operator, and does the money recur?

Before you give to an education charity, work out whether it funds education or runs it, because the two look completely different in the accounts: an operator carries teacher salaries and buildings, a funder mostly makes grants, and its filings should match whichever story it tells. Education is also recurring-cost work: a school needs its teachers paid every year, so a filing history that spans several years tells you more than any single snapshot, and organizations that invite recurring gifts over one-off appeals are being realistic about that. Be careful with reach claims too: "children reached" counts enrollment, not learning, so read what the organization itself discloses about its programs rather than the headline number. Each profile here shows registration status, filings where the charity's country publishes them, and an integrity assessment: that score measures how much the organization discloses, not the quality of its teaching. The full five-step walkthrough is in our guide for donors, and you can look up any organization by name with the charity checker.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an education charity?

An education charity is a nonprofit whose work centers on learning: running or supporting schools, helping students and teachers, or removing the cost and access barriers that keep people out of education. Some fund education through grants and fee support while others operate schools and programs directly. The directory above lists both kinds, tagged to the Education cause by GiveRadar from each organization's name, mission, and registry record.

How do I find education charities near me?

Use the country filter above to narrow this directory to where you live; each profile then shows the organization's registered location and contact details where available. Local education charities are often small, and small organizations file less detail than large ones, so lighter disclosure at that size is normal rather than a warning sign. Whatever its size, confirm the organization appears in its national register before you give.
