How many NGOs and charities are there in Tanzania, and who registers them?

An NGO on the mainland is a Shirika Lisilo la Kiserikali, registered with the Registrar of NGOs. Other nonprofit forms include the society (jumuiya) and incorporated trustees registered with RITA. Zanzibar is a separate jurisdiction, where organizations usually register as societies under Zanzibar's own law, so most do not appear here.
What does NGO registration mean, and what does it not?
NGO registration means the Registrar has entered an organization on the mainland register and applied a limited public-interest check, not that a body endorsed its work. The Board may refuse activities that are unlawful or against the public interest, but it does not rate effectiveness, governance or trustworthiness.
Tax-recognised charitable status is separate. An organization must hold a currently effective ruling from the Tanzania Revenue Authority under the Income Tax Act before qualifying donations become deductible, so registration alone does not confer tax benefits.
Are donations to Tanzanian charities tax-deductible?
A donation to an NGO that holds a Tanzania Revenue Authority charitable ruling is deductible only in calculating business income, usually capped at 2% of business income. Companies and individuals carrying on business can claim it; salaried individuals receive no general donation deduction.
The recipient must hold the separate charitable ruling, and NGO registration by itself is not enough. Confirm the ruling before assuming a gift qualifies for relief.

Check a Tanzanian NGO in the mainland register before giving, using its exact name or registration number. A familiar name or a professional website is not a substitute for confirming registration and current status.
