Charities and NGOs in Türkiye

Türkiye has a deep nonprofit sector built around dernekler (associations) and vakiflar (foundations), plus the historic Islamic vakif tradition that endures in modern public-benefit endowments. The sector is active across earthquake response (especially after the devastating February 2023 quakes), refugee support (Türkiye hosts the largest refugee population in the world), child welfare, education, environmental conservation, women's rights, and disability inclusion. Whether you are searching for a comprehensive list of Turkish charities, a vakiflar genel mudurlugu directory, a dernek lookup, or a single verified Turkish nonprofit to donate to, GiveRadar brings together the official Public Benefit Association list from the Department of Associations, organizations from public NGO directories, contact and website details, news coverage, and an independent integrity score for Turkish nonprofits. Our Türkiye records cover a curated set of public-benefit associations and directory-listed organizations rather than the full national registry and do not include financial statements, so always confirm an organization's registration status directly before giving. Read about how GiveRadar works before you give.

How charities are registered in Türkiye

Turkish associations (dernekler) register with the Department of Associations (Dernekler Daire Baskanligi) at the Ministry of Interior under the Law on Associations No. 5253. Foundations (vakiflar) are governed by the Foundations Law No. 5737 and supervised by the Directorate General of Foundations (Vakiflar Genel Mudurlugu, VGM), which also manages historic charitable endowments. Both forms require ministerial-level approval, and foundations must be established by court order with founding capital. Tax exemption and public-benefit status are granted on a case-by-case basis: for associations, the Council of Ministers can confer Public Benefit Association status; for foundations, the Council of Ministers can grant Tax-Exempt Foundation status, both unlocking donor tax benefits.

Major causes and well-known Turkish charities

The Turkish nonprofit landscape blends large national agencies with deep faith-based traditions:

  • Earthquake response and humanitarian: AHBAP, AKUT Search and Rescue, Turkish Red Crescent (Turk Kizilay), AFAD partner networks, IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation, and Mavi Kalem.
  • Refugee response: Support to Life (Hayata Destek), ASAM (Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants), and World Food Programme partner NGOs.
  • Children: KEDV, Cocuk Esirgeme Kurumu Sosyal Hizmet Derneği, SOS Cocukkoyu Dernegi (SOS Children's Villages Türkiye), and Tohum Otizm Vakfi.
  • Education and youth: Turkish Education Foundation (TEV), Kocun Bilgi Vakfi (Koc Bilgi), Mother Child Education Foundation (ACEV), and Egitim Reformu Girisimi.
  • Foundations and grantmakers: Sabanci Vakfi, Hrant Dink Vakfi, Aydin Dogan Vakfi, and the Vehbi Koc Vakfi.
  • Environment: WWF Türkiye (Doga Dernegi), TEMA Foundation (Turkish Foundation for Combating Soil Erosion), and Ekoloji Kolektifi.
  • Women's rights and disability: Mor Cati, KAGIDER, and Türkiye Spastik Cocuklar Vakfi.

How to evaluate a Turkish charity before donating

Türkiye has a deep but heavily regulated nonprofit sector, so donor diligence is essential. Things to check before giving to any Turkish charity:

  • Ministry of Interior or VGM registration: every legitimate dernek or vakif is registered with the relevant authority; verify on the public registries.
  • Public Benefit Association or Tax-Exempt Foundation status: the strongest signals for Turkish donor tax-deductibility and governance.
  • Audited annual reports: larger Turkish foundations publish detailed Turkish-GAAP statements.
  • International partnerships: partners of UN agencies, USAID, ECHO, FCDO, or major foundations have usually passed vendor due-diligence checks.
  • Independent checks: use our free charity checker tool to review an organization's public signals before you give.

Each Turkish charity profile on GiveRadar combines registration, public-benefit status, governance, contact availability, and third-party signals into a single 0-100 integrity score. Read our integrity score methodology for the full weighting.

Türkiye charity explorer: browse, filter, compare

This page works as a Türkiye charity explorer: every registered Turkish dernek and vakif we hold data on, ranked and filterable by province, cause area, public-benefit status, financial transparency, presence of a website, and size. Use the filters on the left to narrow by category (earthquake, refugee, children, education, environment, foundations, women, disability, religion, advocacy, and more), and the search bar to find a specific organization by name. We enrich records with contact details, websites, programs, and news coverage as sources become available. To compare Turkish giving against other markets, browse all countries or jump straight to disaster relief charities globally.

Donating to charities in Türkiye

Most Turkish charities accept credit-card, bank-transfer, and SMS donations directly through their websites. Turkish donors can deduct up to 5% of taxable income (10% in disaster zones and for specific public-benefit purposes) on donations to recognized public-benefit organizations. International donors typically give through US 501(c)(3) intermediaries, European fiscal sponsors, or platforms like GlobalGiving. GiveRadar links to each charity's official donation channel where available and flags fundraising pages that look unverified. For a structured donor walkthrough, read our donor due-diligence guide.
