Giving in Uganda

How the charity sector is regulated, what kinds of nonprofits operate, and how to evaluate them.

Charities and NGOs in Uganda

Uganda has a vibrant civil-society sector with thousands of NGOs operating across HIV/AIDS response, maternal and child health, refugee response (Uganda hosts the largest refugee population in Africa), education, women's and girls' rights, agricultural livelihoods, conservation in the Albertine Rift, and anti-corruption work. Whether you are searching for a comprehensive list of NGOs in Uganda, a National Bureau for NGOs lookup, a Uganda charity directory, or a single verified Ugandan nonprofit to donate to, GiveRadar consolidates official NGO Bureau registration data, financial information, news coverage, and an independent integrity score for every Ugandan NGO. Read about how GiveRadar works before you give.

How charities and NGOs are registered in Uganda

Ugandan NGOs register with the National Bureau for Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO Bureau), a semi-autonomous body under the Ministry of Internal Affairs, under the Non-Governmental Organisations Act 2016. Organizations apply on Form A (local NGOs) or Form N (foreign or international), provide certificate of incorporation, constitution, governance structure, and recommendations, and receive a Certificate of Registration plus a Permit of Operation valid for one to five years. NGOs are classified as Indigenous, Regional, Continental, Foreign, or International. Tax exemption is granted by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) on application. The NGO Bureau publishes a public, searchable national NGO register.

Major causes and well-known Ugandan NGOs

The Ugandan nonprofit sector spans the full range of cause areas:

  • HIV/AIDS and health: The AIDS Support Organisation (TASO), Reach Out Mbuya, Mildmay Uganda, Baylor College of Medicine Children's Foundation Uganda, and Marie Stopes Uganda.
  • Refugee response: agencies operating in Bidi Bidi, Kyangwali, Nakivale, and Adjumani settlements in partnership with UNHCR.
  • Education and youth: Educate!, BRAC Uganda, Save the Children Uganda, and PEAS (Promoting Equality in African Schools).
  • Maternal and child health: Living Goods, AfriPads, Save the Mothers Uganda, and Engage Uganda.
  • Conservation: Wildlife Conservation Society Uganda, Uganda Wildlife Authority partner NGOs, Bwindi Mgahinga Conservation Trust, and Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
  • Anti-corruption and rights: Anti-Corruption Coalition Uganda (ACCU), Chapter Four Uganda, and the Uganda Human Rights Commission civil-society partners.
  • Women and girls: Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Uganda, FIDA Uganda, and Action Aid Uganda.

How to evaluate a Ugandan NGO before donating

Uganda has a deep but uneven NGO sector, so donor diligence is essential. Things to check before giving to any Ugandan NGO:

  • NGO Bureau registration: every legitimate Ugandan NGO has a Certificate of Registration and a current Permit of Operation; verify on the NGO Bureau register.
  • URA tax exemption: required for legitimate charitable status and donor receipts.
  • Audited annual reports: reputable Ugandan NGOs publish them online with ICPAU-accredited auditors.
  • International partnerships: partners of UN agencies, USAID, FCDO, or major foundations have usually passed vendor due-diligence checks.
  • Sanctions and watchlists: use our free charity checker tool to cross-reference every Ugandan NGO against OFAC, EU, and UN watchlists automatically.

Each Ugandan NGO profile on GiveRadar combines NGO Bureau registration, URA status, financials, governance, and third-party signals into a single 0-100 integrity score. Read our integrity score methodology for the full weighting.

Uganda NGO explorer: browse, filter, compare

This page works as a Uganda NGO explorer: every registered Ugandan NGO we hold data on, ranked and filterable by district, cause area, NGO Bureau permit status, financial transparency, presence of a website, and size. Use the filters on the left to narrow by category (HIV/AIDS, refugee, education, maternal health, conservation, anti-corruption, women, religion, advocacy, and more), and the search bar to find a specific organization by name. The directory updates daily as we ingest new NGO Bureau data and enrich existing records with contact details, financials, programs, and news coverage. To compare Ugandan giving against other markets, browse all countries or jump straight to disaster relief charities globally.

Donating to charities in Uganda

Most Ugandan NGOs accept MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money, and bank-transfer donations directly through their websites. International donors typically give through US 501(c)(3) intermediaries, UK fiscal sponsors, or platforms like GlobalGiving and BetterPlace. Ugandan tax-resident donors can claim limited deductions for donations to URA-approved organizations. GiveRadar links to each NGO's official donation channel where available and flags fundraising pages that look unverified. For a structured donor walkthrough, read our donor due-diligence guide.
