Frequently asked questions

Where can I download a charity dataset?
GiveRadar's Charity Dataset is the world's largest open dataset of nonprofits, with 7 million+ organizations across 65+ countries. Access it free via REST API (100 requests/day, no credit card), search it on giveradar.com, or get bulk CSV export on the Enterprise tier. Per-country datasets are also available directly from the upstream registries (IRS BMF, Charity Commission, ACNC, CRA, etc.) but are not normalized to a single schema.
Is the charity dataset free to use?
Yes. The free tier provides 100 API requests per day with basic charity data and Integrity Assessments. The dataset is published under Creative Commons BY 4.0, allowing commercial reuse with attribution. Pro plans ($99/month) provide 10,000 requests/day with full data access. Enterprise plans add bulk CSV export and unlimited requests.
What format is the data distributed in?
Three formats. Paginated JSON via REST API for real-time queries (free + Pro tiers). Bulk CSV export for offline analysis on Enterprise tier. OpenAPI 3.0 specification published at giveradar.com/api/openapi.yaml for typed client generation. All formats use the same normalized schema across all 65+ countries.
Where does the data come from?
50+ official government registries and regulators including IRS Business Master File and Form 990 (US), Charity Commission for England and Wales, OSCR (Scotland), CCNI (Northern Ireland), ACNC (Australia), CRA T3010 (Canada), RNA/JOAFE (France), ZER/OffeneRegister (Germany), CNPJ (Brazil), NGO Darpan (India), ANBI (Netherlands), NPO Portal (Japan), Hong Kong IRD, and 90+ more. News from GDELT and Google News. No third-party aggregators. Full source list.
How is GiveRadar's dataset different from ProPublica or GuideStar?
ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer (~1.8M) and GuideStar/Candid (~2.5M) only index US nonprofits from IRS data. GiveRadar covers 7 million+ nonprofits across 65+ countries via official charity regulators, plus an automatic Integrity Assessment, news monitoring, and contact data. Different jurisdictional scope, different data layers. See vs ProPublica and vs Candid.
How fresh is the dataset?
Registration data refreshed monthly from upstream registries. Financial filings updated quarterly. Website data refreshed weekly via deep scraping. Integrity Assessments recompute after each underlying data update. News monitoring runs daily. Each record carries a last-updated timestamp.
Can I use the dataset for academic research?
Yes. The free tier is designed for researchers and academics. The CC-BY 4.0 license permits academic and commercial reuse with attribution. For larger research projects requiring bulk export, contact [email protected] about academic pricing. Cite as: "GiveRadar Charity Dataset, accessed [date], https://giveradar.com/charity-dataset/".
What's the license?
Creative Commons BY 4.0. You may use, adapt, and distribute the data commercially with attribution to GiveRadar. Underlying upstream registries may have their own licenses (most government open-data licenses are compatible). For Enterprise customers, custom licensing terms are available.
