Aliansi Jurnalis Independen (AJI) is the Jakarta-based independent journalists' alliance founded on 7 August 1994 through the Sirnagalih Declaration, signed by around 100 journalists in response to the Suharto government's banning of Tempo, Editor, and Detik magazines in June 1994; co-founders include Goenawan Mohamad, Ahmad Taufik, and Satrio Arismunandar. AJI now has 40 city chapters, is a member of the IFJ, SEAPA and FORUM-ASIA, and runs press-freedom advocacy, fact-checking trainings with Google News Initiative, and the Indo-Pacific Media Resilience programme.
