About Beirut for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (BETA)

BETA Lebanon is Lebanon's first no-kill animal shelter and rescue organization, founded in 2004. It rescues abused and abandoned animals — including victims of illegal wildlife trade — and cares for dogs, cats, horses, donkeys, monkeys, and other animals. BETA pioneered Lebanon's first TNR (Trap, Neuter and Return) program in cooperation with local municipalities and in 2021 opened a state-of-the-art shelter built to the highest international standards. The organization rehomes cats and dogs globally and campaigns to combat illegal wildlife trafficking, puppy farms, and animal cruelty.

BETA was founded in 2004 by a group of women who met by the garbage bins where they would feed stray dogs and cats. This led to the development of Beirut Ethical Treatment of Animals (BETA), which has grown into a registered nonprofit in Lebanon, the U.S., the U.K., and France. The 2006 war destroyed their first shelter, forcing a relocation to an abandoned pig farm that was renovated to house 150 dogs. As the number of animals grew and the second shelter became unsuitable, BETA navigated Lebanese ministries for 6 years to obtain a permit for a new shelter, which was completed in 2021 - sustainably designed with solar panels and built to the highest international standards to accommodate over 1,200 animals.
