About
We provide refuge space for Latin American women and children in the UK who flee domestic violence. Our Advice and Information Centre provides advocacy and support for women who are not ready yet to leave abusive relationships or might not be eligible to live in the refuge. We recently took on floating support and we are part of the Islington BME Outreach Project.
LAWA has over 35 years of experience in the provision of supporting services for women survivors of gender-based violence from Latin America and other Black and Minoritised backgrounds. We are the only by and for Latin American women safe accommodation scheme in the UK and in Europe. Our Domestic Abuse Services are composed of safe accommodation, a VAWG (Violence Against Women and Girls) advice centre, and counselling services; we also run community and outreach activities that allow us to increase awareness of our services within the community. Our services have a holistic approach composed by practical support (further advice on immigration, housing, legal advice), and emotional support through counselling sessions. During the last year we supported 1543 women and children survivors of gender-based violence through all our services. Our Mission: Latin American and other Spanish /Portuguese speaking BME women and their children working together to end violence and achieve self determination. Our Vision: A world in which all women and children are free from violence and oppression and achieve self-determination
