Founder Bonita Meyersfeld began volunteering with a gender-based-violence support organization in 2000 while training as a lawyer. Calls from women who felt trapped or failed by the justice system showed her the gap between legal protections and victims’ lived experiences. Lawyers Against Abuse was formed in late 2011 by Meyersfeld, Sheetal Vallabh, Nataly Woollett, Jennifer MacLeod and Claire Veitch. The founders developed its integrated legal and psychosocial model, and its first community centre opened in Diepsloot in 2015.
