Umduduzi was founded in December 2012 by Dr Julia Ambler and Tracey Brand. Both had provided pediatric palliative care in the KwaZulu Natal state health sector between 2008 and 2012 through the Durban office of The Bigshoes Foundation. When that foundation was dissolved nationally, they believed the work needed to continue. Together with a committed board, they established Umduduzi to continue providing specialist care to children with serious illnesses.
