How many NGOs are there in Greece, and who registers them?
GiveRadar tracks 16 NGOs and charities in Greece. This is a small selection drawn from a curated international donation platform, not a national register. Greek nonprofits take several forms: a membership association recognised by the competent Court of First Instance, a foundation created by dedicating assets, or a non-profit civil company recorded in the commercial registry.
Public-benefit bodies may also enter the interior ministry's civil-society database. There is no single unified register, so the fuller picture is spread across these records.
What does registration in Greece prove, and what does it not?
A current certificate or extract establishes an organization's registered existence, legal form, name and filed constitution. It is legal recognition, not an assessment of the organization.
It does not prove current activity, programme effectiveness, financial health or lawful use of every donation. Because records are split across registers, absence from one online search does not by itself mean an organization does not legally exist.
Are donations to Greek charities tax-deductible?
Sometimes. Greek tax guidance provides donor relief for qualifying donations to public-benefit foundations and registered civil-society organisations, subject to conditions and limits.
"Non-profit" and "public benefit" are not automatically the same tax label, so a nonprofit is not necessarily eligible. Confirm the recipient's status and the payment method before claiming relief, using the civil-society registry where relevant.
How do you check a Greek NGO before you donate?
Match the organization's exact Greek legal name against the appropriate court certificate, commercial-registry record or civil-society database entry. A platform listing is a starting point, not proof of standing.
- Confirm the registered form and status in the relevant register.
- Review current governing documents and accounts.
- Check public-benefit status for any tax claim.
- See GiveRadar's integrity score methodology for what each data point proves.
