Giving in Kenya

How the charity sector is regulated, what kinds of nonprofits operate, and how to evaluate them.

Charities and NGOs in Kenya

Kenya is the development hub of East Africa, hosting a vibrant domestic charity sector and the regional offices of dozens of international NGOs that operate across the Horn of Africa, the Great Lakes region, and beyond. The sector is active in public health, education, conservation, livelihoods, refugee response in Kakuma and Dadaab, and women's empowerment. Whether you are searching for a comprehensive list of NGOs in Kenya, an NGO Coordination Board lookup, a Kenya charity database, or a single verified Kenyan nonprofit to donate to, GiveRadar consolidates official registration data, financial information where available, news coverage, and an independent integrity score for every Kenyan NGO. Read about how GiveRadar works before you give.

How charities and NGOs are registered in Kenya

National and international NGOs register with the NGO Coordination Board (often called the NGO Bureau) under the Non-Governmental Organizations Co-ordination Act 1990. The replacement Public Benefit Organizations Act 2013 has been operationalized in stages and is gradually transferring oversight to a new Public Benefit Organizations Regulatory Authority. Smaller community-based organizations (CBOs) register with the Department of Social Development at county level. Charitable trusts can also incorporate under the Trustees Act. Tax exemption is granted by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) on application; only KRA-recognized PBOs can issue donation receipts that qualify for income-tax deduction. Larger NGOs are also typically registered with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner and follow the Code of Ethics maintained by the NGO Council.

Major causes and well-known Kenyan NGOs

The Kenyan nonprofit landscape combines homegrown grassroots NGOs with internationally branded agencies:

  • Health: AMREF Health Africa (Africa's largest health NGO, headquartered in Nairobi), LVCT Health, Kenya Red Cross Society, AIC Kijabe Hospital, and faith-based hospital networks.
  • Education and child development: Kenya Education Fund, Lewa Education, KCB Foundation, and scholarship and school-construction NGOs.
  • Conservation and wildlife: Northern Rangelands Trust, Mara Conservancy, David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, WildlifeDirect, Save the Elephants, and Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
  • Livelihoods, agriculture, and microfinance: One Acre Fund, BOMA Project, Village Enterprise, and Kickstart International.
  • Refugee response: agencies operating in Kakuma, Kalobeyei, and Dadaab camps in partnership with UNHCR and WFP.
  • Children and youth: Nyumbani Children's Home, SOS Children's Villages Kenya, Watoto, and mentorship NGOs.
  • Women and girls: Akili Dada, FIDA Kenya, and Centre for Rights Education and Awareness (CREAW).

How to evaluate a Kenyan NGO before donating

Kenya has a deep nonprofit sector but uneven transparency, so donor diligence is essential. Things to check before giving to any Kenyan NGO:

  • NGO Board registration certificate: every legitimate Kenyan NGO has one and should display the registration number on its website.
  • KRA tax exemption: required for legitimate charitable status and donor tax-deductibility.
  • Audited annual reports: reputable Kenyan NGOs publish them online; look for ICPAK-accredited auditors.
  • International partnerships: NGOs working with UN agencies, USAID implementers, FCDO, or major foundations have usually passed vendor due-diligence checks.
  • Sanctions and watchlists: use our free charity checker tool to cross-reference every Kenyan NGO against OFAC, EU, and UN watchlists automatically.

Each Kenyan NGO profile on GiveRadar combines registration, KRA exemption, financials, governance, and third-party signals into a single 0-100 integrity score. Read our integrity score methodology for the full weighting, and see how to verify a nonprofit for a step-by-step donor walkthrough.

Kenya NGO explorer: browse, filter, compare

This page works as a Kenya NGO explorer: every registered Kenyan nonprofit we hold data on, ranked and filterable by county, cause area, financial transparency, presence of a website, and revenue size. Use the filters on the left to narrow by category (health, conservation, education, livelihoods, refugee response, women and girls, children, religion, advocacy, and more), and the search bar to find a specific organization by name. The directory updates daily as we ingest new NGO Board data and enrich existing records with contact details, financials, programs, and news coverage. To compare Kenyan giving against other markets, browse all countries or jump straight to environmental charities globally.

Donating to charities in Kenya

Most Kenyan NGOs accept M-Pesa, bank-transfer, and card donations directly through their websites or via platforms like M-Changa, GlobalGiving, and JustGiving. International donors typically give through US 501(c)(3) intermediaries, UK fiscal sponsors, or platforms like GlobalGiving and BetterPlace. GiveRadar links to each NGO's official donation channel where available and flags fundraising pages that look unverified. For a structured donor walkthrough, read our donor due-diligence guide.
