How many NGOs are there in Panama, and who registers them?
GiveRadar tracks 11 NGOs and charities in Panama. This is a small slice drawn from a curated international donation platform, not an official register. Panamanian charities usually operate as associations or other non-profit organizations, whose legal personality is recognised by the Ministry of Government and recorded in the Public Registry.
Panama also permits private-interest foundations under a 1995 law, registered at the Public Registry. Those are an asset-holding form and are not inherently charities, so Panama's offshore-services reputation should not be projected onto the charitable organizations shown here.
What does registration in Panama prove, and what does it not?
A registry entry establishes legal existence and discloses filed particulars, such as the constituting instrument, officers and legal status. It is legal recognition, not a verdict on the organization.
It does not by itself prove current operations, financial health, good governance, compliance, charitable impact or eligibility to receive tax-deductible donations. A donation platform's listing is not registration.
Are donations to Panamanian charities tax-deductible?
Not automatically. Nonprofit incorporation and tax-approved donee status are separate: an organization must apply to the revenue authority for authority to receive income-tax-deductible donations.
The revenue authority states that deductible donations must go to qualifying educational or charitable institutions previously approved, and authorized recipients have reporting obligations, as set out in the DGI nonprofit guidance. Confirm the status before assuming a deduction.
How do you check a Panamanian NGO before you donate?
Search the organization's exact legal name in the Public Registry and cross-check the Ministry of Government's directory. A platform listing is a starting point, not proof of standing.
- Confirm legal existence and status in the Public Registry.
- For a tax benefit, confirm deductible-donation status with the revenue authority.
- Ask for recent accounts and evidence of completed work.
- See GiveRadar's integrity score methodology for what each data point proves.
