How many NGOs are there in Zambia, and who registers them?
GiveRadar tracks 23 NGOs and charities in Zambia. This is drawn from a curated international donation platform, not a government register. Zambian NGOs register under the NGO Act 2009 with the NGO Registration Board, which keeps the register and issues extracts.
Other bodies register as societies with the Registrar of Societies, or incorporate as companies limited by guarantee. A listing here shows an organization the platform vetted, not that a government registered it.
What does NGO registration in Zambia prove, and what does it not?
Registration establishes an organization's recognized legal form and inclusion in the regulator's records. It is legal recognition, not a verdict on the organization.
It does not prove operational effectiveness, financial health, current tax exemption or government endorsement. Tax exemption is separate: an organization must qualify and be approved as a Public Benefit Organisation through the revenue authority, and business income may remain taxable.
How do you check a Zambian NGO before you donate?
Confirm the organization's registration with the NGO Registration Board, or the relevant registrar for other forms. A platform listing is a starting point, not proof of standing.
- Ask for a current certificate or register extract from the relevant regulator.
- For a tax claim, check its Public Benefit Organisation status with the revenue authority.
- Request recent accounts and evidence of completed work.
- See GiveRadar's integrity score methodology for what each data point proves.
