How many NGOs are there in Zimbabwe, and who registers them?
GiveRadar tracks 38 NGOs and charities working in Zimbabwe. This is drawn from aid-transparency data, not an official register. Zimbabwean NGOs operating as Private Voluntary Organisations register under the PVO Act with the Registrar of PVOs, in the ministry responsible for public service, labour and social welfare.
Charitable trusts may instead be constituted by a notarial deed at the Deeds Office. GiveRadar's list is compiled from a curated international donation platform and the International Aid Transparency Initiative, not from those registers.
What is Zimbabwe's 2025 PVO Amendment?
The Private Voluntary Organisations Amendment Act came into force in 2025, tightening registration and disclosure, including on funding and beneficial owners. It also expands state monitoring and enforcement and restricts unregistered fundraising and partisan activity.
The government presented it partly as an anti-money-laundering measure, but civil-society and human-rights groups argue it gives the state excessive power to monitor, restrict or close critical organisations. An independent overview is published by ICNL.
What does this data show, and what does it not?
It shows reported development or humanitarian activity: an organization published that it was working in Zimbabwe, through open aid-transparency data. That is useful for seeing who is active.
It does not show that an organization is registered as a PVO or trust, effective, financially sound or independent. IATI publishers report their own information, and IATI checks only its format, not whether it is true, so a listing is a starting point.
How do you check a Zimbabwean NGO before you donate?
Ask for the organization's PVO certificate or registered trust deed and confirm it with the responsible ministry or the Deeds Office. A name in aid data is a starting point, not proof of standing.
- Confirm PVO or trust registration with the Registrar or Deeds Office.
- For any tax claim, check public-benefit status with the revenue authority.
- Request recent accounts and evidence of completed projects.
- See GiveRadar's integrity score methodology for what each data point proves.
