What are animal charities?
Animal charities are registered nonprofit organizations whose primary purpose is the welfare, protection, or conservation of animals: from local shelters and rescue groups to national anti-cruelty organizations and international wildlife conservation nonprofits. On GiveRadar they form the animal welfare category, one of 16 shared categories applied across every country we cover.
What do animal welfare organizations do?
Animal welfare organizations work across the whole span from individual animal care to species-level protection. Typical work includes:
- Running shelters, rescues, and rehoming programs for companion animals
- Veterinary care, spay and neuter programs, and animal hospitals
- Investigating cruelty and advocating for stronger animal protection laws
- Wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, and sanctuary care
- Protecting endangered species and their habitats
- Farm animal welfare and more humane food-system advocacy
How to check a animal welfare charity before you give
The same four checks apply to animal welfare charities as to any other organization, and every profile on GiveRadar covers all four, built from official sources. The full five-step walkthrough is in our guide for donors.
