Akar Foundation (now Akar Global Inisiatif) is a Bengkulu-based civil society organisation founded 12 July 2002 and formally legalised by Notarial Act No. 32 of 8 September 2006, led by executive director Erwin Basrin. It works on agrarian reform, indigenous peoples' rights, forest governance, and social forestry in Bengkulu, including community-managed Hutan Kemasyarakatan areas in Rejang Lebong and Lebong, and in 2020 opened a joint human rights complaint post with Komnas HAM in Rejang Lebong and Kepahiang.
To realize the sovereignty of the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities as the primary guardians of ecosystems and cultural heritage, recognizing their crucial role in maintaining the balance of nature and just governance of natural resources.
The organization was founded in 2006 by figures and activists working on indigenous peoples' issues. It was legally established as Akar Foundation through a Notarial Deed with No. 32, and later operates under the name Akar Global Inisiatif.
