Säätiön meriliikennehankkeen tavoitteena on löytää keinoja, joilla Itämereen päätyvän jätteen määrä vähenisi. Elävä Itämeri -hankkeessa hyödynnetään kattavaa VELMU- tutkimusaineistoa vedenalaisen meriluonnon käytännön suojeluun. Pilottikohteena toimii Gullkronan saari, jonka avulla rakennetaan konkreettinen suojelusuunnitelma ja kerrotaan muillekin vesialueiden omistajille, miten he voisivat suojella alueitaan. Hankkeen tarkoituksena on havainnollistaa, kuinka suojelun käytännössä voi toteuttaa, ja mitä siitä seuraa. Kyse on Itämeren avainlajien elinympäristöjen suojelemisesta ihmispaineilta kuten esimerkiksi ruoppaukselta ja kalastukselta.
