The program began unofficially in 2003 after a focus group of 180 home-based care volunteers raised concerns about orphaned and vulnerable children. Louise Batty and Elizabeth Mabuza developed the initial program with 13 girls. They expanded it by training volunteers and working with more than 1,100 children by the end of 2004. Batty and Mabuza left their jobs to work on it full-time, and the organization was formally registered in 2007.
