Der Verband vertritt die Interessen dieser Unternehmen gegenüber der Politik und betreut in Sacharbeit jedes Jahr zahlreiche regulatorische Verfahren vor der Bundesnetzagentur und anderen Behörden. Die VATM-Mitgliedsunternehmen versorgen 80 Prozent aller Festnetzkunden und nahezu alle Mobilfunkkunden außerhalb der Telekom in Deutschland. Der Verband, der die Wettbewerber der Telekom vertritt, wurde 1998 mit der Liberalisierung des Telekommunikationsmarkts gegründet. Mit der Liberalisierung entstanden nicht automatisch chancengleiche Wettbewerbsbedingungen für alle Marktteilnehmer. Auch in Washington verfügt der VATM über Ansprechpartner:innen in den Bereichen Finanzen, Wirtschaft und Regulierung. Der Verband bezieht Position zu gesetzlichen Rahmenbedingungen auf Landes-, Bundes- und europäischer Ebene sowie zu nationaler und europäischer Regulierung. Dazu gehören u. a. die Rahmenbedingungen für eine Gigabit-Versorgung, die Gestaltung der Förderung beim Netzausbau, Vergaberecht und Ausschreibungsverfahren, Zugang zu Netzen Dritter und Zu-gang Dritter auf das eigene Netz. Der Verband besetzt politische Themen, die für die Zukunft der Mitgliedsunternehmen relevant sind: FTTH/FTTB-Ausbau, 5G und weitere neueste technologische Entwicklungen, Investitionssicherheit durch verlässlichen Regulierungsrahmen, Wettbewerb als Treiber des Gigabit-Ausbaus, Zukunft der Dienste, Qualitätssicherung, Ein-kauf marktgerechter Vorprodukte, Datenschutz und Datensicherheit. Der VATM informiert seine Mitglieder über alle relevanten Themen und Entwicklungen in Berlin, Bonn, Brüssel und in den USA, bewertet und erarbeitet mit den Mitgliedern gemeinsame Positionen.
