Ziel der Arbeitsgemeinschaft ist die Förderung von Natur- und Umweltbildung und Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung. Dies soll beitragen zur Sicherung unserer natürlichen Lebensgrundlagen durch eine entsprechende Veränderung der jetzigen menschlichen Bewusstseinslage und der Lebens- und Wirtschaftsweise. Dieses Ziel wird verwirklicht durch die Unterstützung von Bemühungen, die den Umgang des Menschen mit der natürlichen Umwelt verbessern. Neben dem allgemeinen Erziehungs- und Bildungsauftrag sollen Einrichtungen gefördert werden wie zum Beispiel Umweltstationen und -zentren, Regionale BNE Netzwerke, Bildungsinitiativen zur Nachhaltigkeit, Nationalpark-, Biosphärenreservat- und Naturparkzentren, Bildungseinrichtungen von Naturschutzverbänden, Akademien mit ökologischem Bildungsauftrag, Schullandheime, Jugendwaldheime und Jugendherbergen, Waldschulen , Waldkindergärten und Schulbauernhöfe, Tierparkschulen, Fasanerien und museumspädagogische Einrichtungen, Umweltberatungsstellen, Naturschutzzentren und weiter Initiativen.
