Der Verband hat im Rahmen der Vertretung und Förderung der Interessen seiner Mitglieder insbesondere die Aufgaben, a) wohnungswirtschaftliche und wohnungspolitische Anliegen gegenüber Politik, Gesetzgebung und Verwaltung geltend zu machen sowie die Ideen eines sozialen Wohnungs- und Städtebaus zu pflegen; b) den Erfahrungsaustausch in der Wohnungswirtschaft und im Städtebau zu fördern; c) die Belange der Wohnungswirtschaft durch Öffentlichkeitsarbeit geltend zu machen; d) seine Mitglieder regelmäßig und umfassend zu informieren, sie in allen wirtschaftlichen, rechtlichen und technischen Fragestellungen zu unterstützen und ihre Interessen aufeinander abzustimmen sowie d) Schulungs- und Weiterbildungseinrichtungen sowie dem Wohnungswesen und dem Städtebau dienende Forschung zu fördern. Hierzu werden Gespräche mit Vertreterinnen und Vertretern von Bundesministerien sowie mit Mitgliedern des Deutschen Bundestages zu einer Vielzahl von Themenfeldern geführt, die als Rahmenbedingungen für die unternehmerische Tätigkeit seiner Mitgliedsunternehmen von großer Bedeutung sind. In erster Linie geht es dabei um die Rahmenbedingungen im Wohnungsbau sowie die Bewirtschaftung des Wohnungsbestands und damit zusammenhängende Themen. Zweck der Interessenvertretung ist es, die Sicht der Praxis zu vermitteln und Impulse zur Verbesserung der Rahmenbedingungen zu geben. Im Zuge dessen werden themenbezogene Diskussionsveranstaltungen sowie jährlich ein parlamentarischer Abend und ein Verbandstag durchgeführt, zu denen Regierungsmitglieder, Abgeordnete sowie Vertreterinnen und Vertreter der Ministerien eingeladen werden. Darüber hinaus werden ggf. auch Stellungnahmen und Gutachten zu konkreten Regelungsvorhaben erarbeitet und übermittelt.
