A FEPI – Fundação de Ensino e Pesquisa de Itajubá foi criada por meio da Lei Estadual 3.009, de 17 de dezembro de 1.963, instituída com personalidade jurídica de direito privado e sem fins lucrativos, pelo Decreto Estadual nº 9.016, de 22 de novembro de 1965, como resultado de uma estratégia governamental para interiorizar o ensino superior. Ainda em 1965, foi criada a Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras de Itajubá, que abrigou os cursos de Licenciatura Plena em Letras, História, Matemática, Pedagogia e Licenciatura Curta em Ciências e em Estudos Sociais.
