Mit den VDE Tec Impulsen macht VDE u.a. die Politik auf Technologiethemen wie z.B. digitale Vertrauenswürdigkeit, Energiewende und Künstliche Intelligenz aufmerksam, zeigt Perspektiven auf und skizziert mögliche Lösungen. Um den aufgeklärten demokratischen Dialog und die gesellschaftliche Debatte zu fördern, wird mit dem VDE Politikbrief die gebündelte Kompetenz des VDE in die politische Meinungsbildung eingebracht. VDE organisiert darüber hinaus technisch-wissenschaftliche Fachveranstaltungen, zu denen auch Mitglieder des Bundestages und der Bundesregierung eingeladen werden können. Aufgaben des VDE sind ferner u.a. auch die Ausarbeitung, Herausgabe und Auslegung des VDE Vorschriftenwerks und die Mitarbeit an der Aufstellung, Herausgabe und Auslegung von Normen für die Elektro-, Digital- und Informationstechnik sowie deren Anwendungen. Der VDE-Geschäftsbereich „DKE Deutsche Kommission Elektrotechnik Elektronik Informationstechnik“ (VDE DKE) vertritt die deutschen Interessen in der europäischen und internationalen elektrotechnischen, elektronischen und informationstechnischen Normung. VDE DKE berät darüber hinaus Entscheidungsträger (auch in der Politik) über die positive Wirkung der Normung und Standardisierung (u.a. Innovationstransfer, Abbau von Handelshemmnissen und Förderung des Wettbewerbs) auf die Gesellschaft und u.a. den Technologiestandort Deutschland. Das Forum Netztechnik/Netzbetrieb im VDE (VDE FNN), ein Ausschuss des VDE Vorstandes, entwickelt als technischer Regelsetzer für die Stromnetze in Deutschland die Anforderungen an Technik und Betrieb weiter, fördert und verbreitet die Kenntnisse über Fragen der Netztechnik und des Netzbetriebes der Elektrizitätsversorgung, koordiniert eine vorausschauende Entwicklung des Stromnetzes, unterrichtet Politik und Öffentlichkeit zu den VDE FNN-Themen sachlich und neutral, um dadurch auch Grundlagen für umfassend informierte Meinungsbildung zu den VDE FNN-Themen zu schaffen. VDE ist kein Lobbyverband. VDE ist auch kein Industrie- bzw. Branchenverband. VDE agiert komplett unabhängig. VDE betreibt ausdrücklich keinen Lobbyismus und sieht die Bezeichnung „Lobbyregister“ kritisch.
